Mudding And Off-Roading Safety Tips To Keep In Mind

off road

Heading off road? There’s a right way and a wrong way to do things. The last thing you want is to end up stuck, bogged down, or stranded. Here are a few tips to make sure you stay safe while you’re out mudding this weekend.

Be Prepared

If you’re planning to take the road less traveled, make sure your vehicle is stocked with some essentials you might need in a bind. At the very least, throw in a hand winch, tow strap, high-lift jack, shovel, some wood blocks, and a first aid kit.

Walk it Off

A general rule of thumb is that, if you can’t walk it on foot, then your vehicle likely can’t make it either. This is true for uneven terrain, but it’s even more essential when it comes to water. If you come to a stream, wade it first. You never know where a deep hole could be hiding.

Take it Slow

When it comes to off-roading, speed is not your friend. If an obstacle looks like it requires speed, it’s more likely that it will cause damage to your vehicle or get you stuck. It’s best to take it slow.

Stay on Track

Blazing your own trail seems like a good idea. But there’s also a reason that trail wasn’t there before. If you stick to clearly worn paths, you have more of a guarantee of making it through to the other side.

Leave a Note

Whenever you strike out on an off-roading adventure, make sure someone knows where you are. Send them a text or leave a note with your approximate location. If something were to happen they’d at least know to look for you within a couple of days.
