You’ve been seeing someone for a while. Now, you’re meeting their family and you want to make a good impression. The number one rule – which belongs in all caps and bold – is don’t talk about politics. But that isn’t the only advice you should follow before the big introduction. Here are a few tips to help you put your best foot forward.

The Ice Breakers

If you were going to go with something about the weather we’ve been having lately, then you’ve come  to the right place – because you’re going to strike out quick with that one. Instead, do a little research ahead to find out what your significant other’s family is interested in. Hobbies? Books? Movies? Travel? Pets? Food? Sports? Then ask your partner’s family specifically about their favorite subjects. They should warm up to you rather quickly when you give them the opportunity to talk about themselves.

Bring A Gift

Many times a food or drink item is a go-to choice when selecting a gift for someone who is hosting you, but knowing what to bring can be difficult when you don’t know a person or their tastes. Ask your partner for ideas so you can bring something that is suitable.

Offer To Help

Always ask what you can do to lend a hand, particularly during dinner. From cleaning the dishes to setting the table and anything else, it won’t go unnoticed. Of course, always clear your own plate and clean up after yourself.

Dress To Impress

You’re not there to show off the latest fashion trend. Be somewhat conservative in your attire. If you’re curious about the dress code, it would be a good idea to ask your partner.

Relax

We get it, you feel nervous. But don’t try too hard to make a first impression. Be yourself and have a good time. When you act natural you’ll project confidence, and that may be the best thing you can do when you meet them.
