There are few things more vital to the health of your vehicle than lubricating oil. Not only does it improve performance and extend the life of your vehicle, it also helps prevent any serious issues that could arise as a result of inadequate lubrication. Most oil change service centers will put a sticker on your windshield to let you know when it’s time for your next service. But that doesn’t always mean it’s okay to wait until that date or mileage. Here are some clues that might indicate you need to change your oil sooner.
Check Engine Light
This is a pretty obvious sign that there’s something going on with your vehicle. So, if your check engine light comes on, don’t ignore it. Pop the hood and check the dipstick. If your oil is dark or low, get your car to a service center as soon as possible.
Engine Noise
The purpose of oil is to provide lubrication between metal engine parts so that the engine runs quietly. If your oil is low, the engine noise will increase and eventually begin to start knocking or rumbling. This is a major red flag that your engine is in need of oil.
Dark or Dirty Oil
It’s recommended that you check your engine oil once every month. Simply remove the dipstick, wipe it off, place it back in the oil tank, and remove it again. The oil should be transparent enough that the dipstick shows through. If you can’t see it, it’s time for an oil change.
Noticeable Odor
If you smell gas or exhaust fumes, it could mean that your vehicle is overheating due to a lack of oil. On that note, if you smell oil itself, it could be an indication of an oil leak. Either way, you need to have the issue checked out immediately.
Exhaust Smoke
It’s not uncommon for some slightly visible vapor to be emitted from your tailpipe. But if darkens and turns to smoke, that’s a sign of a problem.
