Whether you live there or plan to visit, be sure to check out the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival.
A Brief History
For years, the SAK Theatre Company entertained. But it became popular due to its involvement with Disney’s Epcot comedy shows. That consisted of producing, performing, and managing members of a live audience. Unfortunately, Disney didn’t renew the company’s contract. As a result, several artists headed out on their own in the early 1980s.
The festival’s founding members are Andy Anthony, Terry Olson, and Rick Kunst. Initially, they arrived in Orlando as part of the SAK Theatre Company. But they decided to create a unique festival following the Canadian fringe style.
So, what’s fringe? It’s a theater production that takes place outside of typical performance venues. Usually, they’re non-traditional and relatively small. It started as a smaller-scale production. But eventually, it turned into a magnificently large and well-loved festival.
Since its beginning, the founders have expanded the festival, making it more exciting and fun than ever. Today, it’s one of the unique things to do in Orlando and beyond.
